Club Sessions at the Ohio State University Ice Rink

As a service to our members, the club purchases private ice at the Ohio State University ice rink to provide dedicated, monitored sessions that are geared towards faster-paced, multi-directional practice and private instruction for freestyle, moves in the field, and ice dancing. Sessions are limited to a maximum of 25 skaters and are governed by ice safety rules and procedures. Monitors reinforce the ice rules and play music for skaters, ensuring that all skaters have equal opportunity to have their program music or compulsory dance music played. Skaters whose music is being played wear a neon vest to aid in identifying that they have right of way and should be given the best opportunity to place their program elements without interference from other skaters and coaches. Club members are encouraged to support club sessions but are not required to do so. Only the skater in the vest has right-of-way.... students in a lesson NOT wearing a vest do not have right-of-way over any other skaters.
For the safety of all participants, skaters on
general sessions must have passed at least US Figure Skating Basic
Skills Level 6 OR be under instruction the entire time they are on the
ice. As part of a continuing trial, skaters of ANY level may skate on a club general
session so long as they are in a lesson the entire time they are on the
ice. Pros, it is your responsibility to make certain your students
understand the ice rules and right of way. These skaters may use
punch cards to purchase "less than entire session" ice time.
A session is
offered on select Sundays 12noon-12:30 with no minimum skill level
required. This session is open to those presently enrolled in CFSC
group lessons and to CFSC club members. Members who are still acquiring fundamental basic
skills are encouraged to take advantage of the numerous other options to
practice on rink-run ice throughout the area. The Columbus Figure
Skating Club purchases additional ice to offer our own "Skate With Us"
learn to skate group lesson program. These
lessons are a tremendous opportunity to obtain affordable instruction in
a group setting from our highly qualified skating professionals.
Group lessons are open to the general public as well as club members. See the Group
Lessons for additional information. Contact
Fiona Loftus, Group Lesson Administrator, with questions.
Spring 2010 Ice Calendar
CFSC Ice Contract Spring 2010
Attached are the Spring 2010 CFSC ice calendar and ice contract.
Contracts
taking advantage of the early payment discount are due March 17th, and
all
contracts are due March 24th.
The sessions the week of June 14 are at a slightly different time (45
minutes
later than normal) due to day camps at the rink. Be careful when
contracting.
We are always in need of ice monitors. Please consider serving as an ice
monitor
if your schedule allows. Monitors receive a $5.50 credit per hour served
to use
against a future quarter ice contract. If you have an ice monitor credit
from
WI10 quarter to apply to the SP10 contact, you will receive a separate
e-mail
with this information.

Autumn 2009 Ice Application
Top ten reasons to
skate on CFSC club ice (with apologies to David Letterman, and in no particular order).
10. Ice monitors to play music, collect payment and keep the peace
9. Neon vests make it easy to see who’s got the right of way while skating a program/dance to the music
8. Basic skills level 6 or higher proficiency required (no dodging tots, no matter how cute, who can barely move in skates….)
7. Dance only sessions (and stroking classes, too)
6. Early morning weekday sessions for those who can’t skate during the work or school day
5. Less crowded sessions
4. Early payment discounts for quarterly ice contracts
3. Adult only sessions
2. Warm rink with clean ice (no drip bumps, dirt balls or mini-icebergs to send you sprawling)
1. The company of fellow CFSC members who love skating as much as you do!!!
and a bonus one, as well: Great coaches!!!
Ice Rules (as pdf to print out)
General Overview:
The Columbus Figure Skating Club purchases ice and holds sessions for the exclusive use of its members at the Ohio State University ice rink. This allows the club to determine what types and lengths of sessions best serve our current membership needs. In the past, CFSC has offered high and low freestyle, lo-basic, synchro, patch, power and high and low dance!
At present, most sessions are either general or dance. Dance may be practiced on general sessions. To skate on club ice, a skater must be at least at Basic Skills Level 6 or equivalent for the safety of all skaters.
Each skater is responsible for following the ice rules (see above). Parents, please make certain that your pro has reviewed the rules with your skater.
An ice contract is offered quarterly which ensures that our ice costs are covered by our members. Purchasing ice on contract gives the buyer the lowest price for the sessions. Sessions are not refundable for any reason unless cancelled or withdrawn by the club. Skaters not on contract may skate standby if room permits, paying with either a coupon card or cash.
Sessions are offered at specific times according to a published calendar. If you wish to skate on a session, you must purchase the entire session, whether or not use remain on the ice the entire time. The monitor will announce the beginning and end of each session. A privilege of contracting allows contract skaters to ADD to their contract session before or after in fifteen minute increments in case they arrive early or wish to stay later. This option is not available to standby skaters. Please be sure your teaching professional knows what ice you are skating so your lessons may be scheduled on sessions you have paid for.
Since the club runs the session, not the rink, skaters need to check in with the ice monitor at rinkside to pay or ask any questions. Rink and front desk staff are not able to answer your club questions.
We are always looking for monitors! Monitors play take attendance, collect money, play tapes and announce the beginning and end of the session. Please the Ice Chairperson, if you would like to monitor a session.
Monitors, if you are going to unexpectedly miss a session, it is your responsibility to see that a substitute is found.
Questions? Contact the ice monitor or Ice Chairperson.
